Biography
Alfred J. Newby was the practical partner in the New York piano-manufacturing firm of Newby & Evans, formed with John Evans in October 1884. A well-known piano-maker and native of Albany, he served his apprenticeship under Peter Mixell, his brother-in-law and an old-time Albany and later New York maker, and took charge of the manufacturing department at Newby & Evans. Under the partners' direction the firm grew quickly, erecting by 1888 a factory on One Hundred and Thirty-sixth Street and the Southern Boulevard capable of producing forty instruments per week.
