Auguste Wolff
d. February 1887
partner and successor to Camille Pleyel
head of Pleyel, Wolff & Company
Biography
Auguste Wolff was the business partner who succeeded Camille Pleyel as head of the Paris Pleyel piano firm upon Pleyel's death in 1855, at which point the concern was renamed Pleyel, Wolff & Company. Under his intelligent management the business expanded considerably, with production reaching 2,500 pianos per year by 1889. Wolff died in February 1887, after which the firm was guided by Gustave Lyon and later incorporated as Pleyel, Lyon & Company. The author notes the Pleyel firm as, to his knowledge, the only piano manufacturer to have installed a practical pension system for its aged employees.
