Biography
Augustus Baus headed the New York firm of Augustus Baus & Company, which began manufacturing pianos in 1880 and built a courteous, reputable business. Spillane describes him as a business man of no common order, prominently identified with the firm's growth and fortunes, and very popular in both commercial and private circles. The firm weathered business reverses that forced it to temporarily give up its retail wareroom and focus on wholesale trade, but under Baus it maintained its standard of quality and was regaining its former popularity by the time of writing.
