Biography
C. J. Whitney, described as a prominent music dealer, bought the business of the failed Detroit Organ Company in 1883 together with practical organ maker E. S. Votey, incorporating it as the Whitney Organ Company. He retired from the firm in 1887, at which point the company was renamed the Farrand & Votey Company.
