Campbell (of Campbell and Gault)

dealer
  • Campbell and Gault

Biography

An otherwise unnamed Campbell kept a store on Maiden Lane in British-occupied New York during the Revolution. According to the memoir of Captain Giles, a British officer went to Campbell's for strings and music-books, and it was at 'Campbell's store' that a pianoforte was obtained on short notice for a 1778-79 performance of Kelly's False Delicacy at the Royal Theatre, in which Major Andre served as prompter. Spillane suggests this Campbell was probably the individual associated with the firm of Campbell and Gault.
