Carl E. Peck
b. 1864 · Austrian
Biography
Carl E. Peck was born at Gitschin, Austria, in 1864, and received a thorough education at the high school and commercial academy in Prague. He served as a one-year volunteer in the Austrian army and received an honorable discharge as a lieutenant in the reserve. Arriving in New York in January 1890, he joined Hardman, Peck and Company, where he was appointed factory manager, a position he held for eighteen years. Prior training in a large lumber manufacturing business in the Black Forest of Germany helped him master the intricacies of piano building, and he earned a reputation as one of the most thorough piano manufacturers of his day. Described as broad-minded, just, fair and liberal, he was said to enjoy the full support of his assistants and to be modest about sharing credit for the firm's success. He succeeded his cousin Alfred L. Peck as president of Hardman, Peck and Company.
