Charles A. Ericsson
b. 1859 · Swedish
Biography
Charles A. Ericsson was born at Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1859 and came with his parents to New York in 1866. He graduated from the College of the City of New York at age sixteen and took up his father's profession; his father had for many years been foreman in the factory of Hazelton Brothers. Ericsson himself worked at Hazelton Brothers for eleven years, gaining a thorough knowledge of piano construction. He then joined John Ludwig to found Ludwig and Company in 1899, taking charge of the factory's management. As the business grew it was incorporated in 1902, and in 1905 Ericsson was elected president, thereafter also overseeing the firm's financial and commercial affairs.
