Charles McDonnell made pianos in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, prior to the founding of the firm Henry Kleber & Brother. A piano built by McDonnell was still being exhibited by Kleber & Brother at the time Spillane's account was written, cited as evidence of the city's early piano-making activity.
