Cludsam

inventor of a concave keyboard (revival)

Biography

Cludsam of Germany revived the concave-formed keyboard idea originally attempted about 1780 by Neuhaus, a piano maker of Vienna, obtaining patents on such a keyboard and, according to Dolge, seriously attempting its commercial introduction. The page opposite this discussion is captioned "Cludsam's Concave Keyboard, 1910," indicating that Dolge illustrates the instrument itself. Dolge frames Cludsam's effort as part of a recurring pattern in keyboard history in which unconventional physical layouts, meant to ease performance, are proposed, generally rejected, and periodically revived without lasting adoption, similar to the chromatic keyboard experiments of Dr. Krause. No further biographical information about Cludsam is provided.
