Biography
D. Benson & Company was, along with Kurtzman, cited by the author as one of the first Buffalo piano-making firms of particular significance, following the earlier, more obscure production of the Scotchman Morrison. Benson & Company were in business by 1842 and made very reputable instruments during that period. The firm carried off the gold medal for the best piano at the New York Mechanics' Institute exhibition in 1850, earning high praise from the exhibition's Committee on Musical Instruments. No individual first name or further personal detail is given for the founder, D. Benson, beyond his firm's achievements.
