Biography
D. J. Van Winkle was one of the makers known collectively as 'the Van Winkles,' who rose to prominence in New York between 1845 and 1855 as producers of excellent pianos. In 1849, while located at 92 West Sixteenth Street, he won the gold medal of the American Institute for the best instrument, and maintained standing in the trade beyond that date. The text notes that many piano makers later known in the trade had worked at his shop.
