David Wolhaupter

drum maker

Biography

David Wolhaupter was a maker of military drums working in New York on the eve of the Revolutionary War. In an advertisement appearing in the New York Journal of May 14, 1775, he asserted that his drums 'equal anything imported,' a boast Spillane cites as typical of the incongruous mix of commercial and patriotic notices printed in the city's newspapers during the run-up to war.
