Dr. John Savage was identified by Spillane simply as "the poet" among the group of literary men—including Henry C. Watson, Cornelius Matthews, Henri L. Stuart, "Barry Gray," and Charles G. Rosenberg—who frequented the offices of the American Art Journal and influenced the early literary development of its editor, William M. Thoms.
