Dwight H. Baldwin
Biography
Dwight H. Baldwin was, according to the text, probably the foremost man of the Ohio Valley as a teacher of music, doing much to develop the musical history of the region at a time when singing teachers traveled by stage coach and horseback teaching violin and melodeon and organizing communities into singing classes. His sterling character was recognized by all who knew him. He was often called upon by his many patrons to select the melodeon or the newly emerging reed organ for them, which naturally led him into the business of selling musical instruments. In 1862 he established a store in Cincinnati, Ohio, out of which grew one of the great industrial corporations of the world for the manufacture and sale of pianos, organs, and player pianos: The Baldwin Company. A portrait captioned with his name (rendered in the OCR as "D. Her Baldwin") and signed by an artist named G. Parker accompanies the text.
