Edward H. Story

founder president
  • Story & Clark
  • Story & Clark Organ Company

Biography

Edward H. Story, son of Hampton L. Story, joined his father and Melville Clark in 1884 to found the firm of Story & Clark for the manufacture of reed organs. When the business incorporated in 1888 as the Story & Clark Organ Company, he became its president, with Melville Clark as vice-president. After Melville Clark severed his connection with the company in 1900 to start his own firm, management passed entirely to Edward H. Story. Under his direction the demand for the company's pianos grew to the point that larger factories were required, and in 1901 the company built model plants at Grand Haven, Michigan, becoming one of the largest producers of high-grade pianos and operating its own chain of warerooms in principal United States cities.
