Biography
Ernst Philip Rosenkrantz was born on July 10, 1773, and served his apprenticeship with Heinrich Ludolf Mack of Dresden before starting on his own account in 1797. He gained a worldwide reputation for his instruments, doing especially a large export business to North America. His son Friedrich Wilhelm succeeded him after his death in 1828, and the firm maintained its reputation for high-grade instruments, enjoying, according to the author, an enviable position among the Dresden makers of the time of writing. The text credits Rosenkrantz personally with establishing the export-oriented reputation that his firm continued to build on for generations afterward, making him one of several Dresden-area founders singled out for individual biographical notice in this closing section of the chapter.
