Biography

Fayette Shepard Cable was born in Cannonsville, N.Y., on March 18, 1855, and graduated from the Delaware Literary Institute at Franklin, N.Y., at nineteen. After teaching school, he managed the school-book business for A. S. Barnes and Company in southeastern New York and New Jersey, then in 1880 moved to Chicago to run the western office of a Philadelphia publishing house, before joining his brother H. D. Cable at the Chicago Cottage Organ Company as secretary and sales manager. After H. D. Cable's death in the winter of 1900, F. S. Cable was elected president of the Cable Company. Described as an indefatigable worker, affable and fair, he organized the Cable-Nelson Company in 1903, which became one of Chicago's leading piano manufacturers, and was noted for surrounding himself with capable assistants and for extensive use of modern manufacturing methods.
