Frank Haines
piano maker
apprentice
Biography
Frank Haines was the brother of Francis Haines, and according to Francis's personal statement to John C. Freund, the two were "both apprenticed in 1839 to the New York Pianoforte Manufacturing Company," a firm started a few years earlier by about twenty of the best workmen from Nunns & Clark. Because the original company's existence was short before it was reorganized under A. H. Gale, Frank and his brother served out most of their apprenticeship associated with the Gale name rather than the original firm. He is linked with the Haines Brothers piano-making enterprise referenced by Spillane.
