Frederick Hazelton

piano maker partner manufacturer
  • F. & H. Hazelton
  • Hazelton Brothers

Biography

Frederick Hazelton was the brother with whom Henry Hazelton partnered in New York in 1850 under the firm name F. & H. Hazelton, after Henry's earlier Albany venture, Hazelton, Talbot & Lyon, did not meet expectations. Dolge describes all the Hazelton brothers as artisans of high order who depended on the quality of their product rather than commercial tactics. No independent dates, training, or further career details are given for Frederick beyond his role as Henry's partner in the firm that later became Hazelton Brothers. From Spillane (1890): Frederick Hazelton, brother of Henry Hazelton and also a practical workman, joined Henry in 1850 to found the firm of F. & H. Hazelton in New York. The firm soon admitted another brother, John Hazelton, and was renamed Hazelton Brothers, which quickly prospered and became among the first New York makers to adopt the full iron frame and enlarged square piano case after 1850. According to the text, Frederick Hazelton retired from the firm several years prior to the book's writing, leaving Henry and John, along with their nephew Samuel Hazelton, to constitute the firm at the time of writing.
