Biography

Frederick Reidemeister was born in Brunswick, Germany -- the ancestral home of the Steinway family -- on November 30, 1865. He attended classical schools there, graduating at eighteen and entering a commercial career. He came to New York in 1888, worked for a large manufacturing company, then joined Steinway and Sons in 1891 as assistant cashier. He was promoted to cashier in 1896, later became a stockholder, and was elected director and treasurer of the company. Described as a deep-thinking, sensitive man with a strong sense of duty, he managed Steinway's finances with painstaking care and ability, and served as a valuable assistant to his brother-in-law, Charles H. Steinway.
