Biography

Garret Conover was the father of piano manufacturers J. Frank and George H. Conover, of Conover Brothers. Believing his sons should have a practical education suited to their individual talents rather than farming, he sent George to Oberlin College and, recognizing J. Frank's natural musical talent, had him thoroughly educated for the musical profession under a German master named Nothnagel. Wanting his musically gifted son to also prepare for the more promising occupation of merchant or manufacturer, Garret Conover arranged with the piano maker Albert Weber to personally train J. Frank in the art of piano-making, a decision that shaped the founding of Conover Brothers.
