George H. Conover
b. June 20, 1844 · American (of Holland extraction)
Biography
George H. Conover, born June 20, 1844, in Mount Morris, Livingston County, New York, was co-founder with his brother J. Frank Conover of the piano dealing and manufacturing firm Conover Brothers, established in 1870 in Kansas City, Missouri. Of Holland extraction, he was educated at Oberlin College at his father Garret Conover's insistence on a practical education. While his brother returned to New York around 1880 to begin manufacturing pianos under the Conover name, George conducted the firm's Western (Kansas City) business. In January 1889 he sold the Western business and relocated to New York to join his brother permanently in the manufacturing enterprise, which had by then grown into a recognized force in the piano trade and was organized as a stock company under New York law in 1887.
