George Hewes
Biography
George Hewes, head of the firm bearing his name, was in business before 1840 on Washington Street, Boston. In 1843 Hewes & Company was formed, consisting of Hewes, Richard C. Marsh, and Nathaniel W. Tileston of Dorchester, Mass. The firm's square pianos, exhibited at the New York Mechanics' Institute fairs of 1847 and 1852 (where they occasionally won awards), invariably contained a form of the Chickering whole cast plate, adapted so as not to infringe Jonas Chickering's patent rights, in common with other Boston makers of the period. Hewes & Company eventually passed away like many other firms, leaving only historical interest.
