Biography

George Cheney (given as George A. Cheney at his first mention and as George L. Cheney thereafter) joined Samuel Merritt Comstock, Charles H. Rose, and William C. Comstock in July 1860 to found the firm of Comstock-Cheney and Company in Ivoryton, Connecticut, which began manufacturing piano ivory. Following Comstock's death on January 18, 1878, Cheney succeeded him as president of the company, a post he held until his own death in 1901. His son, C. G. Cheney, later served as the company's vice-president.
