Biography

H. J. Newton, of New York, is credited by Spillane with anticipating, as early as 1851, the practice of coating piano strings with metallic alloys, a technique later commercialized by Colonel H. W. Gray's 1876 patent for electro-plating piano strings in gold at Schomacker & Company.
