Heinrich Engelhardt Steinweg
German (later American)
founder
Biography
Heinrich Engelhardt Steinweg opened a piano-making shop at Seesen, Germany, a year after Ferdinand Thürmer began at Meissen. In 1850 he left Germany with his family for America; the text indicates that he went on to establish the firm that became known as Steinway & Sons in New York, which his son Theodor Steinweg later joined. The text's coverage of him in these pages is brief, focused chiefly on the German shop and his emigration.
