Biography

Henry Hotopp, the technical member of Hotopp & Company, was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1837 and came to the United States at an early age. He had been a practical varnish-maker since his eighteenth year, and in 1856 he entered the firm founded by William Hotopp, thereafter personally superintending its manufacturing works to ensure the best results. His technical command of varnish chemistry and its application to pianos, including their finishing problems and remedies, was credited as central to the firm's reputation as a specialist supplier to the American piano trade.
