Herz
Biography
Herz is named among a group of virtuosos—including Clementi, Cramer, Kalkbrenner and Pleyel—who took such intense interest in the development of the piano that they invested money earned on the concert platform into piano factories, taking an active part in constructing instruments to suit their own artistic desires. An improvement in piano actions, the Herz-Erard grand piano action, is traced to these virtuoso piano makers and bears his name jointly with Erard's. A concert hall, the Salle Herz, was likewise erected in Paris, alongside the Salles Erard and Pleyel, to give virtuosi and pianos favorable acoustic conditions in which to be heard.
