Biography

Irving E. Devereaux was born in East Nassau, N. Y., and entered the piano business immediately after graduating from the Academy of Albany. He trained as a piano salesman with the pioneer house of Cluett and Sons of Albany and Troy, eventually rising to manager of the firm's various branch stores. In 1892 he took charge of the wholesale business of Lyon, Potter and Company of Chicago for Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan, and in 1894 he joined Smith and Nixon of Cincinnati to wholesale their products in that territory. Having thereby acquired comprehensive commercial knowledge of the piano trade, Devereaux acquired an interest in C. Kurtzmann and Company in 1896, becoming a stockholder alongside Hackenheimer, and has since served as vice-president, with particular charge of distributing the products of the factories. Devereaux appears only as a captioned portrait on a plate grouping him with Christian Kurtzmann, Jacob Hackenheimer, and Geo. H. Moessinger, indicating an association with Kurtzmann and Company. No accompanying biographical text is present in the excerpted pages.
