J. Gramer was one of three men, along with P. H. Powers and O. A. Kimball, who in 1879 bought William Moore's interest in the Emerson piano business, originally founded by William P. Emerson. The three organized the Emerson Piano Company, with Powers serving as president. No further individual detail, dates, or background is given for Gramer beyond his role as one of the company's organizing investors.
