J. H. Gibson

scale draughtsman constructor partner factory superintendent
  • Miller piano
  • H. F. Miller & Sons

Biography

J. H. Gibson is described as an expert scale draughtsman and constructor who, in 1863, joined with Henry F. Miller to make the 'Miller' piano. Their partnership succeeded, and Miller went on to admit his sons to the business, which eventually incorporated as Henry F. Miller & Sons Piano Company. No further biographical detail about Gibson is given in this passage. From Spillane (1890): J. H. Gibson joined Henry F. Miller, Sr. and N. M. Lowe in 1863 in founding the business that became H. F. Miller & Sons. After a few years Miller bought out Gibson's ownership interest, but Gibson remained intimately connected with the firm's progress, serving at the time of writing as the eminent superintendent of the Miller factory and credited as responsible for many of the characteristics of the firm's instruments.
