Biography

J. J. Watson was a historian who took particular care to trace the condition of early art and music in Philadelphia. His manuscripts, later held by the State Historical Society, furnish what Spillane calls incontrovertible proof regarding John Behrent's role in producing the first American pianoforte in 1775. Watson also recorded having seen one of Charles Taws's pianos in 1795.
