Biography
J. R. Mason, born in 1847 in the western United States, joined the Sterling Company shortly after it began manufacturing pianos, acting as secretary and treasurer until 1901, when he was elected to the presidency. Described as a thorough piano-man with many years of experience, Mason developed the company's business to its then-present magnitude, improved instrument quality throughout, and was particularly successful in producing a satisfactory player piano. Under his leadership the company's capital stock grew from $30,000 in 1873 to $1,000,000, and it became counted among the largest piano producers.
