Jacquard
inventor
Biography
Jacquard, noted here for his fame with the silk loom, took up Vaucanson's pierced-cylinder concept and in 1802 added an endless piece of cardboard perforated with holes corresponding to the intended woven pattern. The author states that this perforated-cardboard pattern of the Jacquard loom is, in principle, identical to the perforated music rolls used in player pianos of the present day, making Jacquard a key link in the chain of invention leading to the modern player piano.
