Johann Christian Bach

pianist demonstrator of the piano

Biography

Johann Christian Bach, son of Johann Sebastian Bach, is described by Dolge as having served as an early demonstrator of the piano, deliberately making 'propaganda' for the new instrument. He traveled to London bringing several German pianos with him and gave a series of piano recitals there. His first concert, in June 1763, was called a revelation to London's music lovers, who had never before heard such brilliant playing or tones more forceful than the clavichord and more musical than the harpsichord. Dolge credits this performance with rousing London's harpsichord makers to begin studying the new instrument. No further biographical detail—dates, other performances, or personal life—is given about him in this excerpt.
