Johann Christian Gottlieb Irmler

German

founder piano maker
  • J. G. Irmler

Biography

Johann Christian Gottlieb Irmler was born at Obergrumbach near Dresden and studied piano making with masters at Vienna, placing him within the same Vienna-trained tradition as several other makers profiled in this chapter. He came to Leipsic in 1818, where he founded the house of J. G. Irmler, building very good grand, square, and upright pianos. The surviving text breaks off at this point, so further details of his later career, his death, or the firm's subsequent history under his successors are not given in these pages, though an accompanying portrait captioned 'Oswald Irmler' suggests the firm's history and a successor of that name are addressed just beyond this excerpt. No dates of birth or death are stated in the text as given.
