Johann Lorenz Schiedmayer
German
Biography
Son of Johann Lorenz Schiedmayer's father Johann David Schiedmayer, he sought a larger field for his activities and by 1809 was established at Stuttgart, laying the foundation for one of the most renowned piano firms of Germany. In 1845 he admitted his sons Adolf and Hermann to partnership, changing the firm name to Schiedmayer & Söhne. The progressive firm produced upright pianos as early as 1842, and at the 1851 London World's Fair its products won the gold medal. His younger sons, Julius and Paul, separately founded the harmonium- and piano-making firm J. & P. Schiedmayer, later the Schiedmayer Pianofabrik. A portrait of Johann Lorenz Schiedmayer accompanies the text.
