Biography

John Travis Quigg, a native of Philadelphia, was a musician, critic, and journalist who became editor of the American Musician in 1885. The paper had been founded by the Musical Union in 1884 and published under another, more modest title; under Quigg's direction it gained a new status and character. In 1887 it became an independent journal under his management, and that same year he was joined by John C. Freund as co-editor. Their collaboration built the American Musician into a successful, widely circulated weekly, its success further aided by patronage from the piano trade. Quigg was described as an accomplished musician, an acute and scholarly critic of literature, drama, and the arts, and a personally charming, outspoken gentleman.
