M. Andes
writer
Biography
M. Andes, writing on pianos and their improvements in the Paris Musical Gazette in 1836, is cited by Spillane as a source describing Jean Henri Pape's contributions to piano development, particularly Pape's down-striking-action invention, first exhibited in 1827. According to Andes, Pape was also the first to introduce felt into pianos in Europe, though Spillane notes that Alpheus Babcock of Boston had already patented the use of felt hammer-covering in the United States in 1833.
