Mr. Gray (of Albany)

piano tuner

Biography

Mr. Gray of Albany was a piano tuner who, writing to Spillane, recalled tuning what he described as "an experimental overstrung piano" in 1838. The instrument had been made previously by Jardine of New York, was shaped like a table, and was owned at the time by a Dr. Kip of Albany. Gray's recollection is cited as evidence of John Jardine's early experimentation with overstrung-bass square pianos.
