Mr. Marquand

patron/purchaser
  • Steinway & Sons

Biography

Mr. Marquand of New York is named in connection with one of the most costly 'art pianos' described in the text: a Steinway & Sons art grand built to a special design by Sir Alma Tadema. He is said to have paid forty thousand dollars for the instrument, an enormous sum cited by the author as evidence of the lengths wealthy patrons would go to for artistically decorated pianos. No further biographical detail about him is given beyond his residence in New York and this purchase.
