Mr. Pierce

violin owner

Biography

Old Mr. Pierce lived on Chatham Street in New York and owned an old violin that Dr. Alexander Anderson came to examine in 1792, as recorded in Anderson's diary. Pierce's wife denounced music as leading to the devil after Anderson struck a note on the instrument. Anderson returned in the evening and took the violin away, promising to return it or pay five dollars, and was pleased enough with its tone to have it repaired and varnished.
