Biography
Younger son of the founder of J. G. Irmler, Oswald Irmler took charge of the firm in 1861 at age 26 following the death of his older brother Otto. For 44 years he directed the time-honored firm with marked ability and success, bringing his own sons, Emil and Otto Irmler, into partnership in 1903. He died October 30, 1905, leaving an establishment that, per the text, ranked among the best in Germany. Under the Irmler family's stewardship the firm was appointed purveyor to the courts of the Emperor of Austria and the Kings of Wurtemburg, Sweden, Roumania, and other rulers, and its grand pianos were used in concert by virtuosos including Bülow, Friedheim, Henselt, Felix Mendelssohn, Sofie Menter, and Carl Reinecke.
