Biography

Samuel G. Lindeman was born in New York on March 24, 1869. At his father Henry Lindeman's urging, he took a complete scientific course at New York University, graduating in 1888 as a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. He then spent a year learning banking methods at a large New York banking institution before entering his father's business, devoting three years to studying piano building both practically and theoretically under Henry's guidance. Representing the third generation of Lindemans in the piano trade, Samuel assisted in business management and, described as alert and enterprising, secured for the firm the exclusive use of the Melodigrand sound board construction principle under Frank B. Long's patents, which was adopted for the Lindeman grand, upright, and player pianos. Lindeman, son of Henry Lindeman and grandson of founder William Lindeman, was admitted to the family piano firm in 1901, at which point the business adopted the name Henry and S. Lindeman.
