Biography

Thaddeus Firth, son of John Firth, played an important role throughout his father's business career and was among the partners of Firth, Pond & Company. After his father's firms wound down, he revived the Firth name in the New York music trade for a time before finally selling the business to Oliver Ditson & Company of Boston. At the time Spillane was writing, Thaddeus Firth was a respected resident of Maspeth, Long Island, where he operated a large musical instrument manufactory, and he served as one of the author's sources for facts about the Firth family's business history.
