Theodor Steinweg
German
successor to Heinrich Engelhardt Steinweg's German business
Biography
Son of Heinrich Engelhardt Steinweg, Theodor Steinweg removed the family piano business to Brunswick after his father left for America in 1850. He subsequently joined the already-established firm of Steinway & Sons in New York, selling his Brunswick business to three of his workingmen, Grotrian, Helfferich and Schulz, who adopted the firm name Theodor Steinweg Nachfolger. That firm, per the text, ranked among the foremost in Germany under the later management of Wilhelm Grotrian and his sons.
