Biography
Torp led a succession of New York piano firms bearing his name. As Torp & Company he served as agent for the Jardine piano in 1835. In December of that year he took on a partner, Love, forming Torp & Love, which began manufacturing instruments at 465 Broadway and won the gold medal at the Mechanics' Institute in both 1836 and 1837. When Love left the firm in 1838, practical piano-maker P. Unger took his place, and the renamed Torp & Unger exhibited at the Mechanics' Institute that year, continuing in business at 465 Broadway for several years afterward.
