Biography

Welcker von Gontershausen published "Der Clavierbau in seiner Theorie, Technik und Geschichte" in 1860, with a fourth edition printed in 1870 by Christian Winter of Frankfurt a./M. Dolge describes him as a practical piano maker, fairly well posted on the laws of acoustics and thoroughly acquainted with the characteristics of known musical instruments, producing a work "of interest and value." However, Dolge regrets that Welcker's "extreme patriotism and rather biased opinion" kept him from doing full justice to pianos made outside Germany. Aside from this fault, Dolge recommends the book to studious piano makers and students of musical-instrument history.
