Daytona Piano Tuning
Piano Technician in Miami, Florida
David Dowd’s earliest childhood memories were of a home filled with music. His mother, an accomplished pianist and private music teacher, started David first on the guitar and later on the piano and keyboard. As further inspiration, she took young David to a performance by renowned American pianist Van Cliburn, the winner of the inaugural International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. Van Cliburn’s victory had come at the height of the cold war and had made him not only a symbol of American artistry and diplomacy, but also an inspiration to young pianists like David. Seeing Van Cliburn perform was the catalyst that launched David into a lifelong journey in the music industry. As a teenager, David began freelancing as a keyboardist and later graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. After college, he divided his time between performing and teaching piano, all while becoming increasingly fascinated by the inner workings of the instrument. To master the complexities and subtleties of the piano’s mechanics, David worked as an apprentice with the late Warren Thomas, a concert piano technician trained by John Travis, the founder of modern piano technology. David assisted Warren for eight years, then worked at a Steinway restoration facility in Washington, D.C. Upon returning to Florida, David worked for a Yamaha dealer and later as a piano technician at the University of Miami. In 2009, David founded Daytona Piano Tuning, where he tunes and repairs pianos across central Florida.
